Virginia lawmakers to reintroduce controversial bill that could bring casino to Fairfax County

TYSONS, Va. (DC News Now) -- Virginia lawmakers are considering whether to support or oppose a bill that would allow for an entertainment district centered around a casino to be built in Fairfax County.
Some consider it too much of a gamble, while others are betting on the jobs and tax revenue.

A similar plan was introduced last year in Richmond and didn't get far, but this year there is new momentum due to vocal support from union workers and the organizations that represent them.
"It's going to provide a lot of revenue for the county, which is really seriously needed," said Virginia Diamond, the president of Nova Labor.
Diamond told DC News Now the developer has reached an agreement with union workers to allow workers, including those in the hospitality industry, to unionize should the proposed entertainment district become a reality.
"This offers us an unprecedented opportunity," Diamond said. "And that would mean that they will be gaining good middle-class salaries, health care and pensions."
On the other side, some believe the casino is not what the county needs.
"We did not ask for this," Lynne Mulston, the chair of the No Fairfax Casino Coalition, said.

Her organization will travel to Richmond next week to lobby against the proposal, raising concerns about a potential rise in crime and traffic.
"Frankly, the promise of tax revenues is often overstated for urban, economically developed areas," Mulston said.
Ultimately, the entertainment district and casino's approval relies on Fairfax County voters.
If the bill is passed, and then signed by the governor, it would go to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. If it passes there, it will become a ballot referendum for county voters.
