PIXLEY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A traffic stop turned deadly in Pixley Wednesday night. It happened on the 8000 block of Road 120 just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Tulare County Deputies spotted a vehicle speeding at about 100 miles per hour, with no headlights. When they pulled the vehicle over, trouble began. "Deputies approach and note that we have four people in the vehicle, all very consistent with very suspicious circumstances," said Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux. He said the four men, identified by deputies as 18-year-old Kameron Compton, 21-year-old Alexander Fernandez, 18-year-old Christian Ochoa and 28-year-old Gustavo Benitez were wearing dark hoodies and sweatshirts. Additionally, the vehicle reeked of alcohol and there were open beer cans on the floor. Alexander FernandezKameron ComptonGustavo BenitezChristian Ochoa "All are very characteristic of what we would see in gang activity and/or armed robberies because they're trying to conceal their identities," Boudreaux said. The deputies were met with resistance but were able to remove Compton, Fernandez and Ochoa from the vehicle. They were later arrested.  However, deputies say Benitez, who was located in the back seat, refused to show his hands or exit the vehicle. "He is arguing with deputies demanding their IDs and their badge numbers and etc., but he's still not showing his hands, creating this very dangerous situation," Boudreaux said. Then, a deputy reported seeing a handgun coming up from where the suspect's hands were hidden, the deputy immediately yelled out "gun." "That deputy pulls his gun out, which he didn't have out at the time, and is able to get several rounds off in the same amount of time that the suspect is firing his gun at the deputies." The suspect was shot and sent to the hospital, where the sheriff's office reports he succumbed to his injuries. A bullet from his gun was reported to have struck a home nearby, but Boudreaux said no one in the house was injured.  "Our community is safe," he said. A second handgun was seized. Boudreaux did note, that in recent weeks, Pixley has had a high number of gang-related activities and robberies. "Obviously, there's some gang influence that's still being investigated." The names of the four men have not been released, along with the charges of the three arrested. As for the two officers involved, they are okay but will take time off and have access to counseling resources. The Tulare Police Department has been asked to take over the investigation.
