Halstead's Karenna Gerber shines for Pitt State

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Newman Women's Basketball hosted No. 13 Pitt State Thursday. The match featured an area star in Gorillas' senior Karenna Gerber.
Gerber was named MIAA Player of the Week for her performances in January. She's averaged 20 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
"Her hands and her feet and the way she runs is as good as anybody in the country in my opinion," said Amanda Davied, Pitt State Head Women's Basketball Coach.
In the first game back from winter break, Gerber posted a career-high 35 points and 12 rebounds. She's now accumulated 28 double-doubles in her career.
"You know, a break is just sometimes necessary and it just kind of lets you refresh your mind and your body. And I'm a post, so I have to get a lot from my teammates and, you know, I give a lot of credit to them," she explained.
"She loves the game of basketball. She's really refined her game with just fundamental work. Just get in the gym, finishing shots. So she's a good athlete and you combine that with her competitive nature and you combine that with her intelligence and her basketball IQ and just her relentless spirit. And, you know, I couldn't say enough about, you know, just her as a person," added Davied.
Even with the awards and honors, Gerber still finds a way to maintain her composure in each matchup.
"I've done a Surrender Novena. I'm a Catholic. And so I just found when I give it all to God, then He just kind of takes care of the rest. And so that that's what helps me and it puts less pressure on me when I have him to rely on," she explained.
With yet another double-double against Newman, Gerber enjoys the chance to play for her hometown crowd.
It's a lot of fun. You know, I get a lot of friends and family that I get to see and which is really cool. And, you know, Syd is from Maize. And so, yeah, it's it's kind of like a little hometown reunion for us," said Gerber.
The senior is determined to help the Gorillas reach their goals in her final season.
"The ultimate goal of winning the whole thing is really the big picture. But if I take it a little bit smaller, Pitt State has never made it to the Final Four. So that's kind of the big one that we're aiming at this year," she said.
"There's a little nucleus of them with Syd Holmes, Grace Pyle, and Karenna have been together for a long time, way before Pittsburg State," said Davied. "They want to go far. They have some goals individually, but also as a team. Things that they've talked about probably since sixth grade, you know like 'we want to win the national championship and leave our mark on a program' and they've done that."
The Gorillas are the 2024 conference tournament champions and have their sights set on more success.
