WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita road crews continue to try to clear the snow off the streets, but some snow- and ice-covered areas are taking longer than expected. "The layer of ice preceding the snow and low temperatures have not made conditions easy to abate, but crews continue to treat roads and to retreat as necessary," Mayor Lily Wu said. "Yesterday, they also began preparing for snow forecasted for today." The blizzard over the weekend came after icy rain and sleet coated the streets with thick ice. That is not expected to happen with the new snowfall. The mayor said the road crews have been working 12-hour shifts since last Thursday. "Despite low temperatures impacting the effectiveness of treatment, crews have diligently worked nonstop to make our streets as safe as possible and are ready for any additional snow that we may receive today," she said. "Please continue to use care as you get out, especially on elevated roadways and on bridges." The crews will continue to work rotating 12-hour shifts throughout while there is snow. The city does have a request for citizens. "Please be mindful of our mail carriers and delivery workers," Megan Lovely, the city spokesperson, said. "Make sure you're scraping your sidewalks and making it safe for them." The city has a map where you can track the snow plows. Click here to view it. The names on the map are the names of the snow plows, such as Snowbi One Kenobi, Edgar Allen Snow, and Wolfgang Amadeus Snowzart. Storm Track 3 Forecast: Snowy Thursday night, chilly air hangs on this weekend A spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Transportation told KSN Thursday night that they will have crews running all night long until that snow is cleared. In the Wichita area, KDOT will have 19 plows out Thursday night. This event for KDOT's crews is very similar to the conditions they dealt with this past weekend with wet snow, meaning salt and brine are their go-to for treating the roads. KDOT's representative urges people to take care of themselves on Thursday night when sharing the road with them. "If they see a snowplow truck, those guys are doing a hard job, to give them at least a hundred feet, to work, to plow, don't try to pass them, take your time, drive for conditions, put your phone down, and pay attention to the road," said J.B. Wilson, a KDOT public information officer for the Wichita Metro area. What about your drive to work Friday? He could not guarantee that they would have the job done by the morning commute and cautioned drivers their crews may still be out on the road. He recommends planning on some added time to your morning drive.
