Ewing girls basketball’s new cast of characters surge past Allentown
Jan 09, 2025
ALLENTOWN — The faces may have changed, but the Ewing High varsity girls’ basketball team wants to prove that it still can be a force in the Colonial Valley Conference.
Playing an improved Allentown squad on the road in a cross-divisional game Thursday, head coach Dan Montferrat’s Blue Devils struggled early on against head coach Dana Wells’ Redbirds, but straightened all that out in the second and third quarters on the way to a 64-37 victory.
Allentown held a 15-10 advantage after the first eight minutes, only to see Ewing’s newest cast change the game by outscoring the home team, 36-11, over the next two quarters.
Lillie Alston, a 5-foot-7 junior guard, and Taylor Williams, a 5-9 junior forward, led the turnaround by scoring 11 points apiece during that time span. Williams, who also hauled in 17 rebounds, scored nine of her 15 points in the second quarter to help the visitors take a 26-22 lead at the break.
After a 3-point field goal from 5-2 senior guard Bailey Patten and 1-of-2 free throws from 5-10 junior forward Makayla Rondinelli, the home side drew as close as 28-26 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. However, the Blue Devils responded by scoring 18 unanswered points over the next six minutes.
Alston, who also had six steals and six rebounds, scored six of her game-high 19 points in that quarter. London Bennett, a 5-7 freshman guard, scored all 12 of her points in the second half, while 5-9 senior forward Malayah Miller grabbed nine of her 12 rebounds during that same time frame to help Ewing (4-6) obtain its third win in its last four games.
“Our defense is strong,” Alston said. “We knew we didn’t have the 20-points-per-game top scorers like we did last year, so we knew we had to be better on defense.”
In scoring 19 yesterday and 21 in the last game against Robbinsville, Alston is the first Blue Devil this season to score more than 15 in a game.
“We still have a great team,” Alston said. “I wasn’t worried in the beginning of the game. We have a lot of trust in each other. We know we’ll pick it up.”
That was tough news for the 4-4 Redbirds, who got out to a nice start with Patten and her classmate Jillian Braun scoring five points apiece in the first quarter.
“This year, we’ve really come together as a team. We have good chemistry,” said Patten, who led A’town with 10 points. “They’re still an extremely athletic team. Like coach said in the third quarter, ‘The storm came in.’”
The Redbirds played better in the fourth quarter, but even with 5-1 sophomore guard Lily DeRose scoring six of her eight points, they could not catch a new and improving Blue Devils club.
