RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond city Mayor Danny Avula said residents could see the boil water advisory lifted sometime between Friday and early Saturday. In two press conferences held on Thursday, Jan. 9, Richmond City Mayor Danny Avula finally provided answers to how the water crisis unfolded and what happens next. Avula said the Richmond water treatment system is fully pressurized at all nine zones but are still testing water samples, which is a two-step process. ALL COVERAGE: Richmond Area Water Crisis “The goal is two consecutive negative tests, 16 hours apart,” Avula said. "That is the point at which we can raise this boil water advisory. If all goes well, we should be able to do that [Friday] or early Saturday.” Avula also revealed an automatic power switch failed when the Richmond water treatment plant lost power early Monday morning. The backup battery also failed within the hour or the outage. Department of Public Utilities Director April Bingham was not available at either event to answer questions and we were not told why. Avula also detailed the necessary steps the city is taking so this doesn’t happen again, with upcoming snow on Saturday, January 11. This includes testing battery backups, generators and increased staffing. MORE: What happened at Richmond’s water treatment plant, causing widespread water crisis? “We've had continued commitment from our regional partners to have additional staff, mechanics, technicians, electricians, engineering functions on standby,” Avula said. “We’re also increasing the frequency of our site inspections across all of these different operational components.” The city also plans on postponing DPU payments and fines for water bills this month. The mayor said residents who already have water must continue to conserve to keep pressure up enough to test the water and lift the advisory.
