METHUEN, Mass. (WPRI) — The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is waiving adoption fees for dozens of ducks, chickens, sheep, pigs and goats this weekend as it looks to free up "much-needed space" at Nevins Farm. The MSPCA at Nevins Farm said there are more than 50 farm animals currently available for adoption. "The farm is pretty crowded right now, and it couldn’t be at a worse time," Nevins Farm's Erika Tonnon said. "Those struggling with feed and care also face more challenges in the winter because water freezes and animals can’t rely on grass for grazing," Tonnon added. Tonnon said Nevins Farm is over capacity for pigs, and is encouraging residents to take advantage of the waived adoption fee. "We recently took in eight pigs from a home, and now we don’t have space to help others," she said. "We need to have as much space as possible for the urgent intake needs we're anticipating." Tonnon said among the available farm animals are also dozens of goats rescued from a hoarding situation last spring. "We don’t often waive fees for goats because they’re generally adopted pretty quickly, but sometimes animals get stuck," she said. Those interested in adopting must register in advance and can swing by the farm between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. "Farm animal adoptions are different than those for traditional pets, like dogs and cats," Tonnon said. "Some require additional testing for interstate adoptions, so goats, sheep and pigs can go to homes in Massachusetts on the same day, but we’ll need to schedule pick-ups for out-of-state adopters." Ducks and chickens will be allowed to go home on the same day regardless of where the adopters live. Nevins Farm is also asking potential adopters to bring photographs of where the animals would be housed on their property. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
