Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) -- While people in the nation's capitol honored the former president... people in western KELOLAND held several gatherings of their own. "Today we are honoring Jimmy Carter for his service to this country. All of our Presidents in the downtown Rapid City area are very special to us. Jimmy here is displayed as the common people's President," Visitor Center General Manager Laurie Sutterer said. This down-to-earth connection stems from humble beginnings and the over 35 years of work the Carters had with Habitat for Humanity. "And through their work, many many people have been housed and have been lifted up. And so we find that very inspiring, we find it kind of the gold standard of service and integrity that we want to strive towards," Black Hills Area Habitat For Humanity Executive Director Scott Engmann said. Especially the accords that he supervised during his Presidency," Sutterer said. With Rapid City being the City of Presidents, they are able to highlight each President our country has had throughout downtown. "In a city that remembers those who were elected and who led us, I think this is just a great day to remember them and to be inspired. And to redouble our efforts to be people of service and integrity," Engmann said. President Carter was laid to rest earlier today at his hometown in Georgia. Rapid City offers up the ability to take a Presidential Audio Tour downtown that shares the history and legacy of President Carter and others year-round.
