PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police Officers held a RESET walk Thursday on Calvin Street to connect with community members after a shooting took place in the area earlier in the week.
Officers were called to the 10 block of Calvin Street at 11:23 p.m. for the report of a shooting Monday.
Officers arrived and found 36-year-old Brent Andre Hargraves in a crashed vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the first homicide of the year in Portsmouth.
Thursday, officers and community members went door to door in the same neighborhood for a RESET walk.
Community activist Bilal Muhammad also attended Thursday’s event. He said Hargraves was his great-great nephew.
"It was wonderful seeing that we are engaging in the community and knowing what took place,” Muhammad said. “Brent was a type of young man that lit up the room when he came in the house.”
Officers use these walks to interact with residents following a traumatic event.
Muhammad has lost multiple family members to gun violence, including his own son and now Hargraves.
