Macy's closing Oak Court store in Memphis
Jan 09, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Macy's location in the Oak Court Mall in East Memphis will close, one of 66 Macy's stores closing around the country.
The department store chain made the announcement Thursday. In early 2024, Macy's said it would be closing underperforming stores as part of a new strategy.
Longtime Memphians will remember the store as Goldsmith's, a local department store chain that opened its suburban location on Poplar in 1963, 25 years before Oak Court Mall was built.
It was rebranded as Macy's in the early 2000s.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. in a news release.
More than 40 local investors, including Poag Development Group, closed a $7 million deal back in September to buy the 400,000-square-foot Macy's on Poplar. The location remained open after the sale, with an uncertain future.

The Oak Court Macy's is expected to close sometime in the first quarter this year. The Macy's in Wolfchase Galleria will be the last remaining location in the Memphis area.
