Kentucky Blood Center behind on donations following winter storm
Jan 09, 2025
The Kentucky Blood Center says they’re behind on donations after Winter Storm Blair rolled through the Commonwealth earlier this week.
The center estimates they’ve lost around 650 donations because of the storm. They’re asking for all blood types, with A negative in lowest supply.
“Depending on what the type of donation is, whole blood donations can result in impacting up to three lives. So you can do the math there,” Lindsey said. “We’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of donors lost, which is leading to potentially thousands of lives impacted just by this week alone.”
Lindsey says they expect more winter weather Friday could cancel more potential donations.
“If this sustains, if the storm comes on Friday and we continue to have a low amount of donors, it’s going to put a real strain on the individual blood types,” Lindsey said.
The Kentucky Blood Center has locations open Monday through Saturday in Lexington, Somerset and Corbin. Those interested in donating blood or finding a schedule of mobile drives can visit their website.
