Kansas City gears up for the possibility of more snow

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City is gearing up for the possibility of more snow, while still clearing snow-packed streets from last weekend's blizzard.
Crews are making good progress on what's already on the roads.
The public works director says there's heavy salting happening in areas across Kansas City. While roads in this area are still snow-packed, you can see these blue streaks from the salt here in the snow.
“We still desire clear streets and we're going to work until all our streets are clear," said Michael Shaw, the Director of Public Works with the city.

He said crews have been working around the clock to clear city streets, and they're more than 75% of the way there. However, he says snow-packed and icy roads in neighborhoods are posing a challenge.
“We have several neighborhoods that have compacted snow on streets and how we remove the compacted snow is we have to salt those streets exceptionally well,” Shaw said.
“So, when we salt them, we don't plow them as we're salting them because we don't want to push the salt off the compacted snow.”
In a post on social media, City Manager Brian Platt said in part, "We will be out 24 hours a day until it is gone. Historically we would have given up on this already."
Platt also said they've diverted much of their fleet to northland neighborhoods with packed snow.
Shaw said they had 165 trucks out Thursday morning, 65 in the northland and the rest south.
The city monitors the truck's movement and percentage of routes completed at the Snow Command Center.
KCMO Resident Elizabeth Thornton would like to see more done on her street. She grabbed a shovel and started scraping the street herself.
“It's easy to come up,” Thornton said.
“All you have to do is have sharp enough blade.”
Thornton said she saw three cars get stuck near 37th and Agnes on Wednesday. She was late for a doctor's appointment after two ride-share services turned down the money because they couldn't turn down her street.
“I'm pretty sure they don't want to see no wrecks on this road. The way it is. Because if they expect to have school. The side streets got to be done too.”
Shaw asks people to park in their driveways so plow and salt trucks can get through neighborhood roads.
“As long as we continue to make progresses that's what we want to see, we want to continue to see progress,” Shaw said.
“We also ask people to park in their driveways or park on the north or the west side of the street, that way it would make room for these plows to be able to come through. It keeps it safer, and we can also make it to make two lanes of passible road if at all possible.”

“The cars are on the side of the street, put a snow ordinance in and give them a ticket,” Thornton said.
Shaw said the city started a haul-out operation on Thursday downtown. Crews began removing big piles of snow while continuing to clear sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian areas.
