Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Saturday, Jan. 11, will be the 2025 New Year's Ohana Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii on Oahu. So, to find out more, we are here with its Program Manager, Aline Katase. New report questions Hawaii’s economic survivability There is so much fun stuff on the table. What are people going to be expecting this year and is there anything new? "Well, so it's going to be a fun and busy day," said Katase. "There will be live entertainment in our ballroom, also in our dojo. We have some new people coming like free yoga which is exciting. We will also have lots of food, like you said new vendors this year, poke, taiyaki, andagi of course. Lots of food trucks too, and then we will have cultural demonstrations like calligraphy, mini ikebana, so lots of interactive activities to do as well as a craft fair to shop from, and so much more. There is lots going on." And it seems as if it's not heavily and just focusing on Japanese culture. I mean, you have the "Year of the Snake" shirt which if I'm ignorantly correct, that's Chinese. But we are celebrating that this year as well. "I think that it's more of a local, to celebrate local traditions as well. Even with food, we will have Hawaiian food, Taiwanese desserts, all different kinds of things. Capoeira, so it's not just Japanese culture. We are celebrating local culture and just bringing in the new year," said Katase. So what else are you guys doing? There are a bunch of activities here on the table. ‘At a crisis point,’ Hundreds of animals overcrowd Oahu SPCA "Yes. So, like I said, we are going to have Japanese traditions as well. We have fukubukuro which is tradition. It's kind of like a lucky bag. You don't know what is inside. And then we also have kumade, this is an actual kumade rake. It symbolizes raking in wealth, prosperity, just all good things," said Katase. "So, we will have an activity at the festival. Chose your own icons." Do all the icons have different meanings to them? "Yes. You may be familiar with the kodamatsu as well as the kagami mochi," said Katase. "And kumade is actually another decoration. So these are all traditions, part of the Japanese traditions. There will be mochi pounding this year and even things like calligraphy, you know, you start your new year with writing your dreams and hopes. So, people can do that at this year's Ohana Festival." Parking may be a little bit of an issue. What are the parking options? "So, there will be free parking at Washington Middle School and there will be a shuttle between Washington Middle School and the JCCH," said Katase.
