GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- A Greensboro mother is mourning after her son, a former Dudley High School football player, who died in a crash. A piece of Rickeda Stephens's heart was taken too soon. "He had a really big heart. He didn't play about the women in his family, and he didn't play about his sister. He was just really humble. He would do anything for anybody," Stephens said of her son 18-year-old Jaden Buie. Besides being humble, his aunt, Tiesha Barnwell, and grandfather, Gerald Barnwell, say he was the family comedian and a former offensive lineman for the DHS football team. "After the games, we would always come together and take group family pictures. Those are the highlights ... He loved football, and we loved to go out there and support him on Friday nights," Tiesha said. "My fondest memories of him was just being silly," Gerald said. Early on Wednesday morning, Stephens says her son told her he was driving home. "On Life360, his vehicle had been in the same spot at 4:58 a.m.," she said. Stephens quickly called her husband Gary to see if he had driven by Jaden on Holts Chapel Road on the way to work. "I told her, 'No. It was blocked off.' She got worried, and I made a U-Turn and rushed back home," Gary said. Jaden's mother left her home and walked three blocks to the last known location of her son's phone. She found first responders investigating a fiery car crash. "Several officers approached me ... I knew it wasn't going to be good when they walked that way. They said there was one person in the car, and they didn't make it. I pretty much lost it ... I could've handled if he was transported to the hospital but not for my baby to be gone," she said. Greensboro police say excessive speed was a factor in the crash. "He just felt like he was Superman and had to go to people's rescue," Stephens said. Funeral arrangements for Jaden are not solidified yet. A GoFundMe has been set up.
