ROCK HILL, S.C. — York County is expected to see close to an inch of snow and sleet Friday. The area will be under a storm warning from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. York County Emergency Management says this will be the first snow fall for the area since 2022. Emergency Management says the biggest concern for now is the expected two tenths of an inch of freezing rain that will hit the area. Experts say that number is rising, and with low ground temperatures, this could lead to iced roadways. Responders are urging everyone to stay inside and to avoid driving as much as possible during the storm warning. South Carolina Department of Transportation crews have worked to coat all major highways and primary roads as well as state operated secondary roads with salt and brine. SCDOT began this process Wednesday and hopes it will prevent slippery roadways through Saturday. Additional SCDOT crews were mobilized from around the state to assist in these preventative measures. Piedmont Medical Center said its paramedics will be fully staffed throughout the weekend in cases of emergency. Responders urge all to pre-treat their own driveways and sidewalks if possible with salt and ice melt. It is also recommended to wear multiple layers if you plan to spend time outside, and keep vehicle travel to a minimum. Medical experts suggest that anyone enjoying the snow, only do so for up to 45 minutes at a time, taking 10 minute breaks between, to keep the body from getting too cold.
