Scammers target Burleigh County residents with fake calls about missed jury duty

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a phone scam targeting the community. Scammers are impersonating Sheriff’s Department staff and claiming people have missed jury duty or court appearances.
The calls often pressure victims to make immediate payments over the phone to resolve the issue. The scammers may use intimidating language or claim that failing to pay will result in fines, arrest, or legal action.
Scammers typically demand payment through unconventional methods. They may request money via: • Gift cards • Mobile payment apps • Cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin
These methods are difficult to trace, making it easier for scammers to steal money without being caught.
The Sheriff’s Department has confirmed they will never Call and demand payment over the phone or accept gift cards, cryptocurrency, or mobile app payments as a form of payment.

If there is a legitimate issue, such as a fine or warrant, law enforcement will explain the situation and direct you to resolve it in person — typically at the courthouse or a law enforcement office.
If you get a call like this, follow these steps: 1. Hang up immediately. Do not engage with the caller. 2. Do not provide personal information, such as Social Security numbers or bank details. 3. Do not send money through any payment app, gift card, or cryptocurrency. 4. Call the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department directly at 701-222-6651 to verify any claims.
Scammers often target seniors or those who may not be aware of how these schemes work. Share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors to ensure they know how to recognize and avoid these scams.
The Sheriff’s Department stresses the importance of staying cautious. Sheriff’s officials advise residents to rely on common sense if a call feels suspicious.
“If you’re starting to wonder if it’s legitimate, it probably isn’t,” said Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department Major Jim Hulm. “Just hang up and call us directly to confirm.”
