Choosing healthy foods in a toxic environment
Jan 09, 2025
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The new year is a fresh chance to prioritize your health and wellness, but navigating food landscapes can be daunting.
The frequency of toxins in our food and environment can overshadow how important it is to make mindful, health-conscious choices.
Health educator and expert in natural health, Stuart Tomc, explained that we can't escape environmental toxins, but with small and practical changes, you can make a meaningful difference.
"Toxins and pollutants are everywhere — in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat," Tomc said. "Understanding your omega levels can provide insight into your body's response to these challenges and help guide decisions that promote long-term wellness."
According to the USDA, Americans consume about 104 million pounds of food preservatives every year.
Fortunately, Tomc has six tips to help you detoxify your life in 2025.
Tips for making and keeping fitness resolutions
The first is to assess omega levels. If there's an imbalance, it can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation.
The second tip, depending on omega levels, includes incorporating high-quality fish oil, since it can reduce inflammation and support heart, brain, and immune health.
Choosing organic and unprocessed foods is Tomc's third tip. He says to prioritize whole, fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains.
The fourth tip from Tomc is to stay hydrated and boost fiber intake, since those things can support digestion and natural detoxification.
Focusing on sleep and movement is the fifth tip because those are critical for maintaining energy and the detoxification process.
The final tip is to add natural detoxifiers to your diet with lemon, garlic, ginger, and green tea.
"With so many toxins in our environment, it's easy to feel overwhelmed," Tomc said. "But even small, consistent changes — like supplementing with fish oil or testing omega levels — can dramatically improve your overall health."
