GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana communities continue to show support after the New Orleans terror attack. In Ascension Parish, people are using their grief and blood to help victims. "It hit so close to home, it’s shocking," said Prairieville resident Jenny Bruno. "When we look at it as terrorism, it changes the whole perspective of how you take every step of every day."Bruno was at the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office to give blood to people in New Orleans."I'm B-negative, so I know that I’m a rare blood type, but, with the tragedy that happened in New Orleans, I can't see why I would not donate," she said. The reason is to support victims of the Bourbon Street attack. "New Orleans is special to everyone in Louisiana," said Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre. "We’re only an hour from it, so I remember years and years of my wife and I going down there, to visit the French Quarter. There’s so much history down there.” Webre said this Gonzales blood drive day is the second day of "Battle of the Badges." The first day was in Donaldsonville, where 14 pints of blood were collected."We want to play our small part in helping New Orleans – and helping the hospitals there, that may need the blood so desperately," he said. Several agencies in Ascension Parish including the fire department, the Gonzales Police Department and Fire Departments and the Prairieville Fire Department are all taking part in the drive. Rebecca Villenurve said giving blood is an outlet for her grief over the attack. "When things happen in the world, I feel helpless, and this is the least I can do," she said. Donovan Jackson with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said 36 pints of blood were collected in total.
