Perry held a halftime lead of five points over Orange in its CVC Chagrin matchup Jan. 9. The Pirates then scored five total points in the second half. The Lions retook the lead early in the second half en route to the 61-50 victory. They move to 6-6 on the season. Perry fell to 7-2 and had its five-game winning streak snapped. PHOTOS: Perry vs. Orange boys basketball, Jan. 9, 2025 The Pirates started cold, down 7-1 and were trying to find a shot from beyond the arc. They went 1-5 in the first quarter in 3-point shooting. The biggest challenge was Orange's length. Perry is a cut-heavy team with its guards, and coach Al Iacofano said it was going to be a tall task to get the slashes to the rim. "They can get downhill, they're athletic and have guys that can shoot the ball," Iacofano said. "Their guys off the bench are decent shooters if you give them space. We knew it was going to be tough at their place for a variety of reasons. Defensively, their size gave us some issues." The top two scorers for Perry this season, Vince Tomasic and Derreon Malone, had different first halves. Tomasic had 15 of his 21 in the first half, while Malone didn't have a field goal until the third. But Perry found a spark from beyond the arc in Josh Zentgraf. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers that gave Perry the lead. The Pirates used ball movement and screens to create open looks for Zentgraf, Tomasic and Kaden Brewster. Zentgraf was the second Pirate in double figures with 13. "We were able to get them some open looks and extend the lead in the second quarter," Iacofano said. "Those were the two windows of opportunity for us. We needed to either close out the second quarter up double digits or the first run of the third. Orange was able to cut it to five to end the second and found the first run and those were the difference makers." The Lions pushed ahead in the opening of the third quarter. Players including Major Calhoun and Alex McCulloch had strong on-ball defense to create transition looks. Perry kept the lead to four until the last 30 seconds of the third. Luke Schmotzer drove and kicked to Luke Oblaczynski for an open 3-pointer for the Lions and Jonah Marderstein had a steal and score the next possession that pushed Orange's lead to eight. That run carried into the fourth and was too much for Perry to overcome. Iacofano isn't worried about the team overcoming the loss and seeing its winning streak snapped. The Pirates know they're going to see teams like Orange all through the CVC and Division IV postseason, and this is a big learning point for the team. "They're giving us consistency in practice and in games," Iacofano said. "I don't expect our mentality t be any different tomorrow if we won or loss this game. We talk about that all the time. We're hungry for the next team win or lose." Orange was led by McCulloch with 14 points and Calhoun added 10. Marderstein had nine while Jean-Marie Morris-Barrie and Oblaczyski had eight each. Perry doesn't take the court again until Jan. 14, when it hosts Edgewood. The score Orange 61, Perry 50
