MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) reopened Thursday after a two-hour delay and some parents believe that the doors should have remained closed. Parents said due to the icy road and sidewalk conditions, it was not safe enough for students to return to school. Other parents said the school district made the right call. Montgomery County residents brace for cold weather amid heavy snowfall “My son was actually eager to get back, so that’s a good sign,” Matt Taylor said. While conditions may not have been perfect, he was happy with the district’s decision to reopen schools. “It’s a little bit tricky,” Taylor said. “But I think they’ve been gone for three days and it’s a good time to get the school year started.” MCPS parents John Hughes and Dawn Iannaco-Hahn also agree. “I think it was definitely the right decision for Monday and Tuesday,” Hughes said. “On Wednesday, I was actually for Wednesday.” Iannaco-Hahn said Thursday’s two-hour delay was the correct call. “I am on the road right now as we are talking,” she said. "The roads are fine.” New bus boarding platform installed in Rockville Town Center Although Iannaco-Hahn supports the reopening, she has questions about how clean-up was handled. “My concern is more why it took them so long to clear the schools out and the sidewalks?” she said. Trianna Beckwith has similar concerns, which is why she thinks students should not have been back in school. “I feel like maybe we could’ve just went another day and kept kids and everybody a little bit more safe,” she said. Beckwith chose to keep her children home on Thursday. “With having to walk for buses or having to wait long for buses, even though we’re on the emergency route, it’s still really concerning, and I wanted to make sure everybody stayed safe," she said. The full statement can be found below: “First of all, the safety of our students and staff is our priority during inclement weather and its aftermath. These decisions are made very carefully and with the input of multiple teams, including teams on the ground checking conditions in different locations across the system. Our teams meet multiple times during the day to review status of recovery effort by our internal crews, contractors, etc. They take into relationweather forecast and also how much progress our county partners have done clearing the roads and secondary streets.” Montgomery County Public Schools public information officer Liliana Lopez
