ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Webster Police are investigating a phishing incident that hit the Town of Webster in early November, totaling over $520,000 in fraud.
According to town officials, the fraud involved threat actors posing as personnel representing a contractor out of Webster.
When the Town of Webster became aware of the scam twelve days later on November 20, it took immediate action that included the launch of a criminal investigation with police and the FBI, communicating with the town's insurance agent, reviewing the incident through cyber security, contacting the towns bank, and collaborating with the contractor.
The Town of Webster stated it is fully confident that all lost funds will be recovered through the investigation and insurance. So far, Webster Police Department has recovered $300,972 through criminal investigation, and the town has been authorized to receive up to $240,000 through its cyber insurance policy.
The Town of Webster also stated that Webster's IT Department reviewed all Town accounts and IT-managed systems, and no sensitive or confidential data was compromised as a result of the incident. Review also included recommendations to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
In the coming year, the Town of Webster says they will develop community programming to raise awareness around cybercrime and uses this incident as an opportunity to encourage residents and community members to safeguard themselves against fraud.
News 8 will continue following this story and is expected to speak with Town Supervisor Tom Flaherty Friday afternoon.
