Topeka crews continue to scrape away at snow, ice on roads

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The City of Topeka has completed its first pass at clearing all of the city streets.
Amanda Knowland, Infrastructure Communications Specialist with the City of Topeka, announced in a press release Thursday, Jan. 9 that crews went through the last residential zone. This completes the city's work to finish one pass and treatment of all of the streets in the capital city.
Starting Friday, Jan. 10, crews will start a second round of snow removal and treatment in residential areas. Five contractor trucks will start in the northeast corner of Topeka and work west, using the same order as the first round. In the map below, the zones are marked with yellow circled numbers.

Along with the city crews, five contractor trucks will be working the second snow removal round. Staff with city inspection will assist the street department to make sure the contractor is meeting the city's snowplowing and treatment requirements, according to Knowland.
Thursday, Jan. 8, crews also addressed intersections, hotspots and started to plow or treat any roads that were initially missed. The city is monitoring forecasts and pre-treated roads and bridges for a new round of potential snow.
"As a reminder, snow is hard packed on the roads and in some instances has melted and turned to ice. A snow plow is unable to remove the buildup of packed snow and ice. The plows will push loose material and crews will spread deicing material, which is a salt treated with beet juice to improve its effectiveness. With temperatures forecast for mid- to upper-30s this weekend, the deicing material is expected to aid the melting process."
