MassDOT warning drivers of EZDriveMA text message scheme
Jan 09, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - If you are an EZDriveMA customer, be aware of a text message-based scheme that requests payment for unpaid tolls.
These text message schemes are also known as smishing, which is a social engineering attack that uses fake texts to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cyber criminals, according to IBM.

The schemers, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), are claiming to represent the tolling company and are requesting payment for unpaid tolls. The phone numbers that the schemer texts seem to be chosen randomly and are not associated with an account or usage of toll roads.
If you receive a text like this, do not click on the link, as EZDriveMA never asks for payments over text. Any links that are associated with the tolling company will include www.EZDriveMA.com.
This is in part of a series of smishing schemes that the FBI knows about and they recommend to either file a complaint with the IC3. If you choose to do this, your complaint must include:
The phone number from where the text originated.
The website is listed within the text.
The FBI also recommends checking your account using the toll company's real website, contacting their customer service phone number at (877) 627-7745, and deleting any smishing texts you receive.
