HOLYOKE, Mass (WWLP) - The City of Holyoke is having a special election on Tuesday, January 28 to determine if the city treasurer should remain an elected position or change to a position that would be appointed by the Mayor and City Council.
Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia has been working for two years to bring this to a vote, saying state officials and outsiders, including the Massachusetts Division of Local Services through the Department of Revenue, has consistently recommended the change from elected to appointed.

He also said that as of right now, for someone to run or be elected for the City Treasurer, there aren't many qualifications, which hinders the city.
"Currently, the city treasurer is elected by our community every 4 years, however there is no requirement for these candidates to possess specific financial expertise or a solid understanding of municipal finance," said Mayor Garcia. He said these changes are designed to specifically enhance efficiency, accountability, and expertise in the city government.
