SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity honored former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday at one of its construction sites. The organization, along with members of the community, gathered to raise a wall and sign a door to represent the many doors of opportunity Carter opened through his service to Habitat. Coastal Empire HFH CEO Zerick Samples says the seeds that Jimmy and Rosalynn planted are in bloom now in Savannah. "It just shows that at every level, there's so many people that President Carter touched who weren't even born at this particular time," Samples said. Two families will soon have homes at the construction site on West 53rd Street. Tasha Johnson and Christain Reedy say they are blessed to not have to worry about a place for their children to lay their heads. "It's mine. It's my home. It's a wonderful thing for my kids and I," Johnson said. Both women shared that they never thought they would one day be able to own a home. "To see them do that and to be a great example for their children, I think it is just a feeling that you almost can't explain," Samples said. Attendees left their mark by signing the walls of each home, leaving well-wishes for the families. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter nurtured an almost 40-year relationship with the nonprofit, which builds and refurbishes homes. Mason Waters, a member of the advocacy committee for Habitat for Humanity International, shared how the Carters influenced him to volunteer for the organization. He hopes others are inspired to do the same. "They would work from sunup to sundown. It really comes down to a matter of lead by example," Waters said. "The best thing for us is to love our neighbor, if you will. And Jimmy Carter is certainly the guide stone that we could use to do that." Photo gallery
