McKenna sworn in as newest county councilor

Megan McKenna was sworn in as the newest member of the Summit County Council on Wednesday. The former Mountainlands Community Housing Trust housing advocate replaced Malena Stevens, who announced she would not run for reelection in December 2023.It was a tight race between McKenna, a Democrat, and her Republican opponent Ari Ioannides in November for Seat C. Only 340 votes — or a 1% margin — separated the two candidates. McKenna ultimately earned 50.69% of the vote while Ioannides received 49.31%.McKenna is a former Park City High School teacher and ski patroller and has resided in the Summit County area for most of her life. She graduated from Park City High School in 1999 and earned a biology degree from Northern Arizona University, as well as a master’s in science education.An advocate for affordable housing, McKenna joined the Mountainlands Community Housing Trust when it relaunched its Housing Resource Center in 2022. She specifically mentioned public-private partnerships, which have been a controversial topic in the Summit County community as the County Council worked through — and ultimately voted 4-1 in favor of — negotiations with Dakota Pacific Real Estate.“I advocate for the people and places that make up Summit County,” McKenna wrote in a commentary in The Park Record over the summer. “I support negotiating with developers to maximize community benefit and minimize impact while addressing critical county needs.”Councilors Tonja Hanson and Roger Armstrong, who won their bids for reelection, were also sworn into office on Wednesday, alongside Assessor Stephanie Poll, Sheriff Frank Smith and Treasurer Corrie Forsling.Greg Wolbach, who will serve his first term as the county’s recorder, was sworn in as well.The group of in-person officials who were sworn in on Wednesday.
