HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — A winter storm warning will be in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon for parts of the northeastern North Carolina and eastern and southeastern Virginia, with heavy snow and a light glaze of ice in the forecast in those areas. Blog: Rough wind/cold today. Snow update for Friday night The winter storm warning will remain in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday. The area covered by the winter storm warning covers the following areas: Northampton County in North Carolina Gloucester and Mathews counties in the Middle Peninsula Greensville, Sussex, Surry, Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, and the city of Franklin in the Western Tidewater region Cities of Newport News and Hampton, along with York and James City counties on the Peninsula The National Weather Service's Wakefield office says heavy snow can be expected, with the potential for a light glaze of ice, with total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, and ice accumulations of less than one-tenth of an inch. Areas under a winter storm watch beginning Friday evening include the following: Hertford, Pasquotank, Gates, Camden, Currituck, Bertie, Chowan and Perquimans counties, as well as Elizabeth City in northeastern North Carolina Cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in the watch area, along with ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch possible.
