Tunica residents brace for winter storm

TUNICA, Miss. — Tunica residents were getting ready Thursday from temperatures dropping and snow falling ahead of a winter storm.
The G.W. Henderson Recreation Center has been opened as a warming center for Tunica County. The warming center at 1165 Abbay Drive opened Thursday, with hours of operation from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily until further notice.
Stocking up on food has been a top priority for folks in Tunica County. At the Piggly Wiggly on Highway 61, manager Leonard Triplett says business has increased dramatically.
Triplett says the usual items demanded during a winter storm have been going fast.
"Milk, bread, eggs has been our biggest seller. I mean we been blowing through the roof," he said.
Meat items were going fast as well. Triplett says he doubled his order of milk just so the store would have enough on hand.
Some shoppers were planning ahead with Tunica County Schools closed Friday.
"I'm getting some last minute stuff that I know I'm not going to be able to get tomorrow," said David Gates of Tunica. "We're going to have tacos, gonna have a bunch of people over cause nobody's going to be able to go to school or work."
Tim Raper, who lives in the Tunica Cutoff, is already having weather issues at his home.
"My water's froze up, already," he said. But he's got heat so he came to buy the fixings for homemade stew.
