EKU professor offers advice on dealing with cabin fever
Jan 09, 2025
The second round of winter weather in less than a week is expected in the commonwealth, and some folks are likely dealing with a second dose of cabin fever. Dan Florell is a professor in Eastern Kentucky University’s Psychology Department. He said some people are at higher risk for cabin fever.
“People who like to have control in their life and predictability, this kind of sends them into a tizzy. As anybody who has gone to a grocery store a day before even a mild storm, see people kind of panic buying and like trying to play out, I guess, worst case scenarios.”
Florell suggested thinking of positives, like acknowledging snowplows are out and roads are being salted. If that doesn’t work, try a little shoveling.
“May not help if the plows aren’t out, but you know, most of the time with cabin fever, people find that it dispels if they take a more active role in trying to provide some control over their environment.”
Florell also suggested self-statements like, “I won’t be here forever.”
