LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – 21-year-old Saif Al Khafaji appeared in court, a month and a half after his arrest on sexual abuse charges in November.
Khafaji pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual abuse and indecent exposure.
Attorney Derrick Harris said today was just the first step in the process for his client.
“We’ve gone over some details that I’m obviously not at liberty to say at this point,” said Harris. “But I do think there is going to be evidence that shows this isn’t what it’s been portrayed as being.”
Khafaji was arrested on November 23 by Louisville Airport Police, after a warrant for his arrest was issued in Fayette County.
According to UK Police, the sexual assault happened overnight on November 1o, while the victim was walking near the intersection of Rose St. and Euclid Ave.
Police say Khafaji was also connected with a separate incident of indecent exposure.
Because he arrested at the airport prosecution asked for ankle monitoring, but Khafaji’s attorney says he is not a flight risk.
“I understand that concern, but he was working at the airport. So, he wasn’t leaving Lexington. That’s not what was happening, he was just at work in the cafeteria. He’s already posted a substantial bond of $7500 and we feel like since he showed up today and he has posted a substantial amount, that’s enough.”
Judge Lindsay Thurston said she would take into consideration all of today’s testimony, then hand down her decision on the ankle monitor issue.
Khafaji is due back in court on January 31st.
