LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Fayette County Public Schools remain closed for the rest of the week due to severe weather conditions, including heavy snow and icy roads that have made travel difficult. This week, classrooms across the district have been empty, with snow plows instead of school buses filling neighborhood streets. The district reports the school closures are part of traditional snow days, not NTI (Non-Traditional Instruction) days. “We’re taking it day by day we continue to speak with the local officials as well as national weather officials,” said Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins. “Waiting to see exactly what happens what the city is able to do with the roads,” added Liggins. Despite the cancellations, the district is considering alternatives if in-person learning can’t resume next week. However, Superintendent Liggins emphasized that the storm hit while students were on winter break, leaving many without the necessary resources to implement NTI days at this point. “Many of our teachers are on campus, we’re trying to make up possibly an alternative plan to see how our NTI plan will actually be implemented,” Liggins said. “But we want to make sure we’re being equitable to all of our families. So we’re really brainstorming on the best way to do that,” said Liggins. As the weather disrupts school, some students face food insecurity due to the lack of regular school meals. Fayette County’s Family Resource Youth Services Centers (FRYSC) are working to assist families with necessary resources. “Yes, our FRYSCs are working with our families very closely to ensure that they have resources that they need, connecting them with community partners and are out ensuring that our kids are taken care of,” said Liggins. “And that’s been happening since earlier this week,” said Liggins. The district is also conducting a survey to determine how many families already have access to technology that could help enable NTI learning if classes are not back in session next week. Dr. Liggins warned that if school remains canceled into next week, it could affect the academic calendar, as the district has already used its allotted snow days.
