Winter Weather Advisory starts Friday; 2" to 4" of snow likely
Jan 09, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS — Thursday morning was the coldest morning in central Indianapolis in nearly a year.
Temperatures dropped down below zero in several locations, the coldest spots were in Columbus and in Crawfordsville where the low temperatures fell to -8°. In Indianapolis, the morning low was 5°. This is the first time Indianapolis has had a temperature in the single digits since January 21st, 2024. It was even colder then. Indianapolis recorded a temperature of -1°.
Now we turn our focus from bitter cold to accumulating snow. A strong storm system along the Gulf Coast has prompted a wide reaching swath of winter weather alerts stretching from Texas to the Carolinas, including most of the Hoosier State. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for central Indiana. It will be in effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday.
This system will impact us early Friday morning. Expect flurries and light snow showers during the morning commute. The accumulating snow will develop later in the morning with the heaviest snowfall from this system occurring in the afternoon. Snow showers will continue through the afternoon before tapering off late in the evening. Overall, snow totals of 2" to 4" are likely across all of central Indiana, with some heavier accumulation of up to five inches along the Ohio River.
After a snowy Friday, the weekend will be quiet and remain cold. We may get above freezing Sunday afternoon, but it will be close. Renewed arctic air is set to settle back into the state early next week and by the middle of next week, low temperatures below zero will be possible again.
