Sometimes, people feel stuck in situations where they are unhappy, tired or feel powerless. This day encourages people to take action and say “no” when necessary, reclaim their personal power and make decisions that improve their well-being.
It’s a chance to remind yourself that you deserve respect, happiness, and control over your life.
The idea behind the day is simple: no more letting people walk all over you. Whether it's a situation at school, home, work or with friends, it’s about saying you are in charge of your own happiness and choices.
The day gives people, especially keiki, the courage to speak up for themselves and not let others take advantage of them. It’s about feeling empowered and recognizing that you have the right to decide what is best for you.
Here are 10 things you can do on I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore Day to feel more in control and empowered.
Speak up for yourself
If someone is being rude or treating you badly, politely tell them how it makes you feel. You can say, “I don’t like that” or “Please stop”. It’s okay to stand up for yourself.
Set boundaries
Let people know what is and isn’t okay. If you don’t want to do something, it’s okay to say “no”. You have the right to protect your time and energy.
Practice saying “No”
Sometimes, we feel like we have to say yes to everything. Try saying “no” when someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do or don’t have time for. Saying “no” is powerful!
Take time for yourself
If you feel overwhelmed, take a break. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk or just resting, it’s important to give yourself time to relax and recharge.
Stand up for others
If you see someone being treated unfairly, speak up for them. This not only helps others but also makes you feel strong and brave.
Change what you can
If something in your life isn’t making you happy, think about how you can change it. It might be as simple as organizing your room or as big as talking to a trusted adult about a problem you’re facing.
Journal your thoughts
Writing down how you feel can help you process your emotions. It’s a way to understand what’s bothering you and how you can address it.
Create a self-care plan
Make a list of activities that help you feel good, like exercising, eating healthy or spending time with friends. Make time for these things in your day.
Ask for help
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure, don’t be afraid to ask someone for help. This could be a parent, teacher, co-worker or friend. You don’t have to do everything alone.
Believe in yourself
Remind yourself that you are strong, smart and capable. No one should tell you what you can or can’t do. Believe that you can make choices that lead to a happier life.
On Jan. 7, take a moment to reflect on your life and think about what changes you might need to make in order to feel more in control.
