NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) - A family celebrated on Thursday with the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity and ThedaCare after the organizations helped them get a brand new home. On Thursday morning, Yer and her family finally got the keys to their much-needed new home, courtesy of both the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity and ThedaCare. Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay raises over $1 million during Christmas Campaign As a child, Yer was born in Laos and lived with disabilities. Her family fled the country during the Vietnam War, spending 14 years in a refugee camp before immigrating to the United States as a single mom with four children. Yer and her two adult sons applied for a Fox Cities Habitat housing opportunity due to overcrowding, as the three lived with a third son, his wife and six children. The household of 11 shared a four-bedroom home, and they needed more space. "It doesn't matter how they build it, I'm just happy it's a place I can call home," Yer's son Somboon said. John Weyenberg, the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity CEO said the project started 3-4 months ago and expressed joy over seeing the family's warm expressions after getting the keys. "The bulk of the work was through volunteer efforts," Weyenberg said. "It's always a joyous occasion and every one of these dedications is special because it's a unique family and group of volunteers, when we bring the community together, we can make great things happen."
