CONVICTIONS UPHELD IN CHRIS BEATY CASE
Jan 09, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO) — The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld the convictions of Marcus Anderson, Nakeyah Shields, and Alijah Jones for the murder of Chris Beaty, known as “Mr. Indianapolis.” On June 21, 2023, a judge sentenced Anderson and Jones to 164 years in prison, while Shields received a 108-year sentence. The three were found guilty of felony murder, armed robbery, and attempted robbery in connection to their actions on May 30, 2020.
That night, Anderson, Shields, and Jones first robbed two women at gunpoint, taking their phones, wallets, and other belongings. Later, while the city was grappling with protests and riots in response to George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Beaty was shot and killed while attempting to help someone during a robbery outside his downtown Indianapolis apartment.
All three of them appealed their convictions. They challenged procedural aspects of the trial and the severity of their sentences. The Indiana Court of Appeals, led by Judge Dana Kenworthy, rejected their appeals. The court ruled there were no significant trial errors and found that their sentences were appropriate.
Attorney General Todd Rokita expressed that although it is impossible to prevent every crime, his office is dedicated to keeping dangerous criminals off the streets through appeals processes, highlighting the impact of their work in maintaining safety for the people of Indiana.
