HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - Firefighters worked to put out a large fire at a home west of Roanoke Thursday. Smoke coming from a house off Old Fort Wayne Road and 900 North could be seen for miles starting sometime before 10:30 a.m. House fire in Huntington County near Roanoke (Courtesy Nick Turpchinoff)A home was destroyed in the fire.A long line of fire trucks responded when a house went up in flames Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025.The smoke was visible for miles. Nobody was home when the fire started, which was called in by a passerby, according to Roanoke Fire Chief Brandon Taylor. It was determined the fire started in the basement and spread from there to the first floor and the rest of the house. Two dogs died in the fire and the Red Cross is offering assistance to the family. Taylor told WANE 15 that had the fire been called in 30 minutes sooner, there might have been a different outcome. It's not known yet what caused the fire. Seven fire departments assisted the Roanoke Fire Department in fighting the fire.
