Turkeys diagnosed with bird flu in Adams, Jay counties
Jan 09, 2025
(WANE) - About 20,000 turkeys in northeast Indiana have been diagnosed with bird flu amid an outbreak around the country.
The Indiana State Board of Animal Health said a commercial flock in Adams and Jay counties tested positive, and according to a release from Jan. 4, a control area has been established.
Board officials said they would be reaching out to flock owners in the area to offer testing.
The first human death from bird flu in the U.S. was confirmed Monday in Louisiana.
According to the release, the deadly bout of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which began in 2022, is the largest animal health emergency in the history of the United States.
The prices of poultry have generally gone up due to supply and demand issues linked to the outbreak.
