COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is joining a group of Republican governors for a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump this week as he prepares for a second term. McMaster will travel to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach on Thursday evening for the meeting, his office confirmed to News 2. The meeting is expected to focus on how governors can help implement the incoming administration's agenda, according to the Hill. As policy chair of the Republican Governors Association, McMaster could play a key role in executing several of Trump's policies, including his pledge to carry out mass deportations. In a Dec. 11 letter, McMaster -- and 25 other Republican governors -- pledged to use "every tool at our disposal" to support the administration's immigration policies. That includes using state law enforcement or even sending South Carolina National Guard troops to the southern border. “As Republican governors, we stand united in support of President Donald Trump’s unwavering commitment to make America safe again by addressing the illegal immigration crisis and deporting illegal immigrants who pose a threat to our communities and national security," the letter stated in part. Trump gives GOP senators no set strategy as leaders struggle to craft his priorities McMaster has long been a strong supporter of Trump, a loyalty that Trump has rewarded throughout the years. Trump first campaigned for Gov. McMaster in 2018 while seeking his first full term as South Carolina’s leader. McMaster replaced Nikki Haley after she was appointed to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump Administration. Thursday won't be McMaster's first visit to Mar-a-Lago. He attended a private meeting with Trump at the estate in February 2022 at the former president's request.
