BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man accused of driving with a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when his SUV plowed into the back of a parked car -- killing both occupants -- was sentenced Thursday. Martin Alameda Sanchez, 25, received a 12-year prison term after pleading no contest to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, among other charges. Two counts of second-degree murder were dismissed under last month's plea agreement. A niece of one of the victims wiped away tears as she spoke about how her family is struggling without her aunt. "All I can say is that my aunt was an amazing person and a devoted person to God," she told the court. "We know she's with us everywhere." Here’s how to help those impacted by the wildfires across Southern California On Sept. 28, Sanchez’s Dodge Durango slammed into a parked car on the north curb of 1200 East Truxtun Avenue, police said. The passenger and driver in the car died. An hour after the 11:14 p.m. crash, Sanchez gave breath samples registering his BAC as 0.257 and 0.262% — more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%. Sanchez told police he drank a 12-pack of Modelo 12-ounce cans before getting behind the wheel, according to court documents. He said he was arrested in Oakland last year on suspicion of drunken driving, and knows it’s dangerous.
