Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced a bill Thursday to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America." “The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries," Greene wrote in a statement on the social platform X. "It's our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it's what the entire world should refer to it as." The lawmaker lauded the bill, which would direct the chair of the Board on Geographic Names under the secretary of the Interior to rename all federal documents and maps within 180 days of being signed into law. Greene had promised to introduce the legislation "ASAP" after a Tuesday proposal from President-elect Trump encouraged the name change.  “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said.  “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum immediately hit back with her own play on words suggesting North America be labeled as “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America.” However, Trump’s idea has materialized with the help of Greene. “Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it. This is a piece of Day 1 legislation that can easily be awaiting President Trump’s signature the moment he takes his oath of office,” the Georgia representative added in her statement. “I urge my colleagues to join me to quickly pass this bill.”
