SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Walgreens will reportedly close 12 stores in San Francisco next month. According to separate reports in the San Francisco Standard and the San Francisco Chronicle, the pharmacy chain will close the stores due to rising business costs.
The locations set to close include the Market Street location where Banko Brown, an unarmed 24-year-old Black transgender man, was shot to death by a security guard in a shoplifting incident in 2023.

Last year, Walgreens announced it would be closing 1,200 nationwide over the next three years. According to a report in NPR, the pharmacy location closures were part of a plan for a financial turnaround as the retail chain faces competition and lower prescription payouts.
"It's never an easy decision to close a store," said the company in a statement cited by the Chronicle. "When closures are necessary, like those here in San Francisco, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions."
KRON4.com has reached out to Walgreens to independently verify the reported closures. We are awaiting a response.
