WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A simple interaction repeated daily creates connection. That's the formula "Prime Fit" uses to nurture and mold students. "It lets us understand who they are," explained Jay Simpson, Prime Fit mentor. "Being there daily to hold them accountable for how they behave, how they act and how they get off track with some of the things that they have going on at home." Mentors with the nonprofit dedicate an hour a day to visit local students. The volunteers are spread out among 35 schools in five districts. "We're not sitting here trying to be anybody's dad, but if we can be a big brother, we're going to go above and beyond to do that," Simpson said. Simpson has been with Prime Fit for over a year. During his time, he has bonded with 10-year-old Brody Green. "They don't make me mad. They just make me happy," Green said. The mentors serve as a support system and listening ear for the students when needed. Wichita nonprofit helps NICU babies every Christmas "Get on their level of understanding. It allows them to open up a little bit easier to you in those one-on-one settings. They see it more as they're talking to them, you know, as an equal," Simpson said. An equal who encourages them to be better. "It's made me more encouraged to act right," Green said. The nonprofit proves consistent visits, although short, can bring big change. Prime Fit is looking for more mentors as they grow. They also offer tutoring assistance and after school programs. You can reach out to learn more at [email protected].
