BOSTON (WWLP) - A man from the Dominican Republic faces firearm and drug charges after a search at a Massachusetts shelter.
In a news release sent to 22News on Wednesday from the Justice Department, 28-year-old Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, who was residing at the Quality Inn Hotel in Revere, has been charged in federal court in Boston for allegedly possessing five kilograms of suspected fentanyl and an assault rifle.
Screening emerging as issue in shelter debate
During a search at the shelter on Dec. 27th, officers found five kilograms of suspected fentanyl, an AR-style assault rifle, ammunition, two rifle magazines, digital scales, and an abundance of latex gloves in the room Sanchez was staying in.
Sanchez was arrested and charged by criminal complaint with one count of possession with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl and one count of being an alien in possession of a firearm who has entered the United States unlawfully.
On Monday, Governor Maura Healey announced a review of shelter policy amid a barrage of questions over how a Dominican national — who the feds say entered the country illegally — came to be at a Revere family shelter with 10 pounds of lethal drugs and a large-capacity rifle.
