WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The nation will say goodbye to former president Jimmy Carter Thursday.
His state funeral will take place in the nation’s capital.
The snow and cold temperatures have not stopped people from coming to the U.S. Capitol to pay their respects to the former president.
Carter will be honored with a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
"I met the Carter family. They were lovely. They weren't really, very sad, but also, they were celebrating because it was a very fine man,” said President-elect Donald Trump.
President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump paid their respects to the late president at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
At 91-years-old Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa.) was in Congress during Carter's presidency.
"He and I were bit by different political bugs, but we had a similar foundation,” said Grassley.
Maura Sammon met Carter when she was just five years old, she traveled from Philadelphia to pay her respect.
"I just want to thank them one last time. I just want to thank him for everything he's given me, everything he's taught me,” said Sammon.
Reverend Patrick Mahoney says Carter's legacy is one of compassion.
"The scripture calls us to love mercy, to love justice, to walk humbly before our God. I think Jimmy Carter embodied that,” said Mahoney.
The state funeral will start around 10amET and then Carter will make his way back to Georgia for his final resting place.
