Snow on its last round with temperatures still cold in New Mexico
Jan 09, 2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Southern snowy conditions, breezier winds in the Northeast Highlands, and bitterly cold conditions are everywhere with most of the snow south of I-40 causing travel issues with localized low visibility because of not only the snow, but also, patchy freezing fog, with gustier north-northeasterly winds returning along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, making it feel like it's the single digits above zero to near -15 degrees occasionally in the San Juan Mountains. Moisture with a tightening area of low pressure south-southwest of Albuquerque will continue to meet up with the cold air-mass today to produce more-widespread snow with one more round of even more-dangerous wind chills.
Forecast Continues Below
Weather: How long will the snow last in New Mexico?
Community: Albuquerque Fire Rescue crews heading out to fight California wildfires
National: Jimmy Carter honored with state funeral in DC before Georgia burial
To start across the region from northwest to southeast, air temperatures are mostly in the single digits, teens, and 20s.
As the jet stream continues dip moves overhead with the evolving storm system slowly moving east later today, light-to-moderate snow with chilly rain activity late will become more widespread with more southern snowfall mostly south of I-40 that will partially move back north in areas like the Central Mountains, the Northeast Highlands, the Zuni Mountains, the San Juan Mountains, and even in parts of the Rio Grande Valley with stronger northeasterly winds with patchy fog redeveloping late tonight into tomorrow morning along the tail end of the storm system. Below-normal temperatures will persist for most, except for the seasonable afternoon temperatures with more areas than not mostly dry in the Four Corners. From the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the high teens, 20s, 30s, and low 40s east-northeast to west-southwest.
Either way, winter-like conditions will persist for all in the short term with air temperatures tomorrow morning ranging from several degrees below zero to the low 20s from north to south with dangerous wind chill values in the single digits to as low as -20 degrees. Then, an eventual warming trend with drier westerly winds briefly return later tomorrow before another storm impacts the Sangre de Cristo mountain communities to the east late this weekend.
