Winter Storm: Several inches of snow Friday, dangerous travel conditions
Jan 09, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Now is the time to get prepared before the winter storm moves in on Friday, bringing with it several inches of snow and hazardous travel conditions.
Expect bitterly cold temperatures in the high teens/low 20s early Thursday morning, but we should actually see a decent warmup during the day with light southerly flow kicking in through the afternoon.
For at least a short time we will climb into the mid to high 30s.
As precipitation begins to arrive from west to east tonight, it’s likely to start as a brief drizzle or sleet before quickly changing over to snow. Snowfall will intensify overnight and remain heavy at times through Friday morning.
It will gradually taper off from west to east on Friday afternoon. While only a few schools have officially canceled classes on Friday so far, you should plan on ALL schools ultimately making that decision.
Everyone in the WREG viewing area is going to get at least 2-4 inches of snow. However, there will be a large swath of 5-7+ inches along and south of I-40, down through the Delta and northern Mississippi.
In southern parts of Coahoma, Quitman, Panola, and Lafayette Counties there are likely to be brief periods of changeover to sleet, which may slightly cut down on localized snow totals. However, 3-5 inches is still very likely in these areas.
The snow is going to cause hazardous travel, so plan to stay at home on Friday. Even on Saturday, not much melting will occur as we will barely climb above freezing in the afternoon.
This will be heavy, wet snow that could also cause sporadic power outages.
