LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Thursday! Hope you’re staying warm out there on this frigid Thursday morning. It’s gotten as cold as -10° in Harrison County at the Kentucky Mesonet Site there near Cynthiana. The cold temperatures are expected to continue through the day with afternoon highs only reaching the low 20s for most. Our eyes then turn to our next winter storm that will be moving in during the day on Friday. This one is expected to bring another round of heavy snowfall to the area. This time the heaviest of the snow will likely be across southern Kentucky. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for most of central Kentucky ahead of this storm. Our current forecast has 3-6″ of snow for southern Kentucky, with 2-4″ of snow expected for areas along and north of I-64. We have also been mentioning the possibility of a band of heavier snow that could form parallel to the Ohio River to our west and move into the bluegrass region. This could increase the snowfall totals for the Frankfort/Lexington area. The greatest impacts to travel will be during the midday for south-central Kentucky, through the afternoon and evening for the rest of the area. Periods of heavy snow will be possible during the afternoon and evening hours. Hazardous travel should be expected during the afternoon commute for most of the area. The intensity of the snow will taper off Friday night but you can still expect lingering off and on snow showers to last through the day on Saturday. Road travel will still be difficult during this time period as road crews get out to clear off the snowfall. We aren’t done with the wintery weather either… A quick moving clipper system could drop more light snow by early next week. The one chance we have at reaching the freezing mark temperature wise will be on Sunday ahead of that system. The rest of the 7 day forecast remains below freezing.
