Bitter cold Thursday; more snow Friday
Jan 09, 2025
This is the coldest morning in central Indianapolis in nearly a year. Temperatures have dropped down to the single digits in most locations. This is the first time Indianapolis has had a temperature in the single digits was on January 21st, 2024. It was even colder then. Indianapolis recorded a temperature of -1°. A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for far eastern Indiana until 9 AM. Wind Chills there and many other locations in central Indiana have fallen below zero degrees. Aside from the bitter cold start to the day, it will be a quiet and sunny Thursday. Temperatures will rebound to the mid 20s this afternoon.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for central Indiana. It will be in effect from 4 AM Friday to 4 AM Saturday. A wide reaching swath of winter weather alerts stretch from Texas to the Carolinas.
This system will impact us beginning Friday morning. There could be some light snow showers or flurries during the morning commute. However, we aren't expecting to see much accumulating snow until later in the morning with the heaviest snowfall from this system occurring in the afternoon. That doesn't mean we couldn't see issues on the roads Friday morning. It doesn't take much to create very slick conditions. Snow showers will continue through the afternoon before tapering off late in the evening. See the slideshow below. Overall, snow totals of 2" to 4" are looking likely across central Indiana.
The weekend turns quiet and remains cold. We may get above freezing Sunday afternoon, but it will be close. Renewed arctic air is set to settle back into the state early next week.
