DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - While rescuing an ice skater who had fallen into the icy waters of Wisconsin's Lake Monona on Wednesday morning, rescuers also broke through the ice. According to the Madison Fire Department, its Lake Rescue Team was called to Lake Monona after getting multiple reports of an ice skater who fell through the ice on January 8. (Madison Fire Department) First responders arrived at 10:30 a.m. and spotted the person roughly 150 to 200 yards from shore, northeast of Monona Terrace. Authorities say the person had already pulled themselves out of the water and were back onto the ice. However, while the Lake Rescue Team was on foot toward the ice skater, rescuers broke through the thin ice. But thanks to a rapid deployment craft (RDC), personal flotation devices, and cold weather exposure suits, the rescue team was protected. The release noted that the depth of Lake Monona in the area of the incident is estimated to be around 40-50 feet deep. They were subsequently taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No additional information was provided.
