(SALIDA, Colo.) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect with a gunshot wound. On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Chaffee County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a domestic violence call around 4 p.m. in a rural area west of Salida. Upon arrival, deputies found the caller, a woman, had safely exited to a neighbor's home, however, the suspect, identified as a 54-year-old man, refused to follow deputy commands and barricaded himself inside his home. Deputies tried to negotiate the suspect's surrender without success. Sometime later, the 54-year-old shot at law enforcement from an upstairs window. Three deputies and a Salida police officer returned fire not knowing if they hit the suspect or not. Law enforcement then used chemical munitions to convince the suspect to surrender. The suspect exited the home and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment as he had a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He has since been transferred to a hospital in Colorado Springs where he is stable. The suspect is expected to face multiple charges including Domestic Violence and Attempted Murder of law enforcement officers. No officers were injured and there is no danger to the public according to the CBI.
